Split Level Revamp, Wilmette, IL

Situated at the end of a cul-de-sac, this mid-century split level gem was updated for 21st century lifestyle with a thoughtful 2nd floor addition. The addition configuration, still abiding by the angulated topology of the existing house and neighboring ones, nevertheless appears to solidify the house by creating central verticality to an otherwise horizontal jumble of materials. The cantilevered bay not only provides weather protection to the existing entry door and stoop below but also provides a visual link between existing and new structure while adhering to the aggressive front yard zoning setback.

The new interior rooms are open and spacious permitting a much improved relationship between form and function. The existing dark stair hall was reconfigured with a large central skylight tower to bring in much needed natural light to all interior levels of the home.
